18 days until The Masters – The 18 Holes

The countdown continues…

18 days until The Masters begins – here are the 18 Holes at Augusta National – all named after a flower or a plant.

Here is a list of the holes and some of the most memorable moments on them…. please fill in the gaps missing by commenting with your favourite moments and memories on any of the holes.

No. 1 – Tea Olive –  Par 4, 445 yards – The Masters is usually Opened by honorary Starters such as in 2012 – Palmer, Nicklaus and Player

No. 2 Pink Dogwood – Par 5, 575 yards – Louis Oosthuizen’s albatross looked like it was going to be the shot of the 2012 Masters until Bubba Watson found the trees in the pair’s sudden-death playoff. In the final round, Oosthuizen’s second shot at the at the par-five second hole seemed drawn by a magnet as it rolled onto and along the entire length of the green and into the cup. Truly a fabulous effort.

No.3 Flowering Peach –  Par 4, 350 yards – In 1998 Nicklaus chipped in here for eagle He was 58

No.4 Flowering Crab Apple – Par 3, 240 yards

No.5 Magnolia – Par 4, 455 yards – This is certainly the least seen hole at Augusta. It’s way out on the Southeast side of the course. Nicklaus eagled it twice in 1995

No.6 Juniper – Par 3, 180 yards – Chris DiMarco made a hole-in-one here in the opening round in 2004, which is amazing enough. But more amazing, the next day, he came within three inches of doing it again.

No. 7 Pampas – Par 4, 450 yards –  Just as it all seemed over for the world number Tiger Woods  does the unthinkable, getting himself back into the tournament by holing his second shot on the par-4 7th!

No.8 Yellow Jasmine – Par 5, 570 yards

No.9 Carolina Cherry – Par 4, 460 yards

No. 10 Camelia – Par 4, 495 Yards

No. 11 White Dogwood – Par 4 , 505 Yards -The Larry Mize hole.  This is where he holed a sand wedge from 140 feet to steal the Masters from Greg Norman.

No.12 Golden Bell – Par 3, 155 Yards – Bubba Watson’s near impossible hook shot on the 12th hole got him out of trouble before he went on to win his first Masters title.

No.13 Azaelea – Par 5 510 Yards – Phil Mickelson 13th Hole – Second Shot 2010 – The essential Phil Mickelson go-for-broke shot, this effort helped propel Phil the Thrill to his third Masters title. Stymied by a pine tree with more than 200 yards to the green, Mickelson, who led by two at the time, had the opportunity to play it safe or try the hero shot. He chose the latter.

No.14 Chinese Fir – Par 4, 440 Yards

No.15 Firethorn – Par 5, 530 Yards – Unfortunately for Gene Sarazen, his “shot heard ’round the world” happened over 75 years ago. No television captured the moment that probably deserves a higher ranking. Sarazen was staring at a 235-yard second shot on the par-5 15th hole. Sarazen pulled out a 4-wood and drained it for the first double-eagle in Masters history.

No.16 Redbud – Par 3, 170 Yards – The exquisite chip shot played here  by Tiger Woods on the 16th hole in the 2005 Masters on his way to winning the event for the fourth time.

No.17 Nandina – Par 4, 440 Yards

No.18 Holly – Par 4, 465 Yards – There are surely many many famous moments on this hole the cheers for an aging Palmer and Nicklaus, Tiger’s hug his father, the mini-leap of joy for Mickelson when he won in ’04 and the putt for Mark O’Meara, The King Arnold Palmer in 1960 came to the 18th tied with Venturi. Palmer found the fairway and carved a brilliantly struck 6-iron to five feet. Palmer made the birdie and took home the Masters title.
